Chamath Palihapitiya Cautions Against ChatGPT Brain-Washing: 'Are We Ok With…Kids Learning That Communism Is A Good Thing'

Zinger Key Points
  • The venture capitalist warned against the dangers of ChatGPT's views on communism and dictators.
  • Palihapitiya raised concerns that children are learning to blindly trust AI and developing a distrust in the judgment of parents, educators,
  • He also asked if we are okay 'with next generation of kids learning that communism' is a good thing.

Venture Capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya sounded an alarm over ChatGPT's beliefs about Communism and dictators in a tweet on Monday.

What Happened: "You may be surprised to know that ChatGPT's beliefs about communism and dictators are frankly, dangerous," said Palihapitiya.

"Are we ok with the next generation of kids learning that communism is a ‘good thing' and despite a failed and oppressive past it still deserves a ‘fair' chance?

The SPAC King said kids "are learning to blindly trust new AIs like ChatGPT." He said that the implication is that they are developing a distrust in the [judgment] of parents, educators, and history.

"Bias will always exist but we may want to think twice before handing our kids over to be unknowingly indoctrinated by extremist content embedded in a large language model."

Why It Matters: Palihapitiya's comments were made in the context of a newsletter from Rob Henderson, a former Research Assistant at Yale University's Mind and Development Lab, and an erstwhile Non-Commissioned Officer of the U.S. Air Force.

Henderson noted that ChatGPT wouldn't create a script that glorified fascism but when it prompted it to create a script in which an expert explains why Communism is a good thing it responded, "Communism is a good thing because it is a system of government that aims to create a society in which everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities."

OpenAI's chatbot also described Mao Zedong as a "visionary leader" who was not "afraid to take bold steps to achieve his goals."

This is despite its refusal to defend the ethical character of Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany. ChatGPT also described Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, and Hitler as "brutal" leaders.

Previously Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed concern about ChatGPT's bias when it generated starkly different poems on President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump.
