Former President Donald Trump was found liable by a Manhattan jury Tuesday in a civil battery and defamation lawsuit filed against him by author E. Jean Carroll, according to ABC News.
Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s; she also accused Trump of defaming her in an Oct. 12, 2022 social media post, labeling her allegations as a "complete con job."
Trump's remarks formed the basis of the defamation aspect of the lawsuit.
The jury began deliberations on Tuesday, ultimately deciding to hold Trump liable for battering Carroll and for defaming her.
The jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages, according to The New York Times.
While the former president was found liable for sexual assault, the jury did not find him liable for rape in Carroll's case.

The civil lawsuit is one of several legal battles the 2024 presidential candidate is facing.
Trump pleaded not guilty last month to 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to his alleged role in hush money payments toward the end of his 2016 presidential campaign.
