How ChatGPT Helped Seattle Man Get In Shape And Keep Up With His 6-Year-Old Daughter

Zinger Key Points
  • Seattle man used ChatGPT to create a healthier routine and lost 26 pounds.
  • ChatGPT helped the man gradually increase his workload, keeping him motivated and preventing burnout.
  • While the use of bots for health advice can be risky, the man fact-checked ChatGPT's suggestions by asking it to cite references.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has been garnering attention for its impressive ability to generate text that closely resembles human language. Now, what if we told you that ChatGPT can assist you in your fitness journey too without requiring you to spend a fortune on expensive gym memberships?

What Happened: A tech expert from Seattle discovered the key to weight loss with the help of an odd ally — ChatGPT. And guess what! He lost 26 pounds in the process.

To keep up with his six-year-old daughter, Greg Mushen resorted to artificial intelligence in February for assistance in creating a healthier routine, reported Insider. He wanted to be "around to see different milestones" in her life.

So, Mushen used OpenAI’s chatbot to develop a healthier routine. The plan seemed to work and Mushen felt more invested. The incremental pace of the program got him fired up to keep going. He did not feel burnt out, which had been the case with grueling exercise sessions in the past.

Within three months, he said, he saw significant gains in his energy levels. He also lost weight and his heart health indicators, such as resting heart rate, showed an improvement.

Though he hated running earlier, Mushen, who lives near a running trail, used ChatGPT to get addicted to it. Mushen devised a plan to get addicted to running by getting ChatGPT to act as if it had doctorates in sports psychology and neuroscience. "I was curious about what would happen, but didn’t think it would work," he said.

According to the program suggested by ChatGPT, the workload was increased gradually. Now, Mushen's routine includes six running workouts a week, including four easy runs lasting 45 minutes to an hour at an average speed of 13 minutes per mile, according to Insider.

Why It Matters: Mushen said that his experimental use of ChatGPT provided a straightforward, cost-free way to accomplish his goals, although experts have cautioned that information provided by ChatGPT may be inaccurate or irrelevant at times, reported Insider. So, it's crucial to fact-check any advice offered by AI.

Mushen got around this by requesting ChatGPT to cite references from research he could later check, and before acting on any suggestion, he made sure it appeared sensible and safe.
