Tim Tebow Channels 'Hamilton' At VeeCon 2023: 'How Do You Write Like You're Running Out Of Time'

Zinger Key Points
  • Tim Tebow is a fan of the musical Hamilton.
  • Lyrics from one of the hit musical's songs spoke to Tebow and were part of his keynote at VeeCon 2023.

Former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow, is recognized primarily for his football career, but he hopes to leave a legacy that extends far beyond sports, he told attendees at VeeCon 2023.

What Happened: A lineup of over 100 speakers took various stages at VeeCon 2023 sharing business advice and life lessons. A keynote speech from Tebow kicked things off Saturday.

Tebow told the audience that he was passionate about football, but hopes that people remember him for much more than that. His talk called “Creating A Life of Significance” was full of life advice and even some song lyrics from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.”

“How do you write like you’re running out of time,” Tebow said quoting the song “Non-Stop.”

Tebow read several lines of lyrics from the song that features Alexander Hamilton discussing writing the Federalist Papers.

“When I die will people remember me as having a sense of urgency, would anyone ever say that about my life that I lived with such passion and urgency,” Tebow asked the crowd.

Having watched "Hamilton" in person twice, it was Tebow's third spontaneous outing to the musical with his girlfriend, who later became his wife, that enlightened him to the profound significance of the song "Non-Stop."

“I also wanted to be someone who lived with a sense of urgency.”

While listening to the song for a third time in person, Tebow said he couldn’t help but begin weeping as the cast sang the song about Hamilton’s life.

Tebow said he had a passion for football and that’s what he will be remembered for, which led to the song lyrics speaking to him.

Why It’s Important: Tebow challenged the VeeCon 2023 audience to be passionate about something and live their lives with the purpose of being remembered for something after they’re gone.

“Will anyone say that you need tomorrow to arrive,” Tebow said.

The former football player and television analyst said that you want to be contagious and have people wanting to be around you.

Tebow added that an award like the Heisman Trophy is just another item for the mantle. When people think of Tebow and what he’s most passionate about, he told the crowd, it would likely be the game of football.

“But at the end of my life, hopefully, it's not for a game.”

Tebow said he hopes to be remembered not just for his passion for football, but also for his fervor extending beyond the sport and manifesting in dedicated service to people. “Because that’s more important than a game ever was.”

Tebow recalled a missionary journey in Thailand, where he witnessed a young boy in a ditch, covered in mud and sewage, wearing tattered clothing, notably an old Florida jersey with Tebow's name on it.

The boy “wasn’t just starving for food, [he] was starving for humanity,” Tebow added.

Tebow asked the crowd if they were “hope carriers.”

“Are you just bringing passion and urgency to be successful, or doing it because you love to?”

Tebow said he hopes everyone attending VeeCon 2023 was successful, but more importantly that they were significant. “Success is about you, significance is about other people,” he explained.
