ChatGPT Parent CEO Thinks One Size Doesn't Fit All For Al Regulation

ChatGPT-parent OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO Sam Altman has been a advocating for stringent regulations concerning artificial intelligence — but he also wants to keep an exception for smaller AI startups.

What Happened: In a bold departure from the prevailing narrative, OpenAI CEO has ignited a heated debate by advocating for nuanced discussions on AI regulation.

While powerful AI models warrant stringent regulations, smaller startups in the field should be granted exemptions, Altman proposed during the ET Conversations event in New Delhi, India.

“We have explicitly said there should be no regulation on smaller companies. The only regulation we have called for is on ourselves and people bigger,” he stated.

OpenAI, under Altman’s leadership, has notably called for self-regulation among larger organizations, challenging the widely held notion that uniform regulations should be imposed across the entire AI industry.

During the conversation, Altman emphasized that in the short term, investors face significant challenges in accurately assessing the value of companies involved in AI product development. However, he countered this by highlighting that in the long term, AI is significantly underestimated in terms of its potential impact and value.

The OpenAI CEO also acknowledged that adopting AI may lead to job losses but stressed that new and better opportunities, currently unimaginable, would emerge.

Why It’s Important: Altman is currently on a global tour, traversing various countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, India, and South Korea, as part of his mission to engage with key figures and heads of state.

His tour has brought forth meaningful discussions surrounding the need for regulation, particularly concerning content-generating AI technologies like chatGPT.

Although Altman’s earlier criticisms of planned AI laws in Europe stirred controversy, OpenAI has since revised its perspective, further fueling the ongoing debate on AI governance.
