Jack Dorsey disagrees with Elon Musk's view on regulating AI and praises Mark Zuckerberg for his open-source approach.
In an interview, Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey challenged Elon Musk’s doomsday narrative on artificial intelligence regulation while offering unexpected praise to Meta Platforms Inc. META CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s open-source approach.
What Happened: In a thought-provoking interview, Dorsey engaged in a compelling discourse surrounding the regulation of AI and its potential societal implications.
He dismissed the notion of a complete AI shutdown and acknowledged the global arms race in the technology’s development, stating, “I don’t believe pausing AI is realistic.”

While Dorsey emphasized the need for AI regulation, he expressed concerns about the current understanding of regulators. He urged them to focus on the fundamental aspects of the technology rather than driving specific outcomes.
Dorsey’s remarks took an unexpected turn when he praised Zuckerberg’s decision to open-source their large language model. Highlighting the significance of open-source models, he stated, “I really respect the fact that he chose to open-source his large language model … we all have access to these technologies, and people can build on top of it.”
The Twitter co-founder also admitted potential risks in open-source development but said that individuals striving to protect the overall technology and humanity would function as a balancing effect.
Addressing the concerns of fellow technologists, Dorsey acknowledged the prevailing hype around AI and cautioned against succumbing to sensationalist narratives.
He stated, “I think there’s a lot of hype in AI right now … we move from one fashion to the next fashion.” He acknowledged the importance of considering potential harmful outcomes and argued that embedding safeguards within the technology is the best way to address these concerns.
