Jim Cramer Compares AI To Hitler, Says 'The Machines' Pose Biggest Threat To Democracy In Ages, Could 'Set Off Something Horrible'

  • Jim Cramer warns that AI's ability to create "believable lies" could have catastrophic effects on democracy.
  • "Is the real fear Skynet from 'Terminator,' or is it maybe a fake presidential candidate," Cramer says.

Artificial intelligence can be used as a tool for a lot of things, including generating believable lies. That's why Jim Cramer is warning that AI poses a massive threat to America's political system

What To Know: In the closing segment Tuesday on CNBC's "Mad Money," Cramer warned that it's easy to be fooled by deep fake videos generated by AI and the consequences of these videos could have catastrophic effects on democracy.

"Some warn that it doesn't seem so silly anymore to wonder if the machines can take over," Cramer said.

"If they are only at about a third grade level right now, which is what the experts are saying, what happens if they can learn what could really hurt us and set off something horrible?"

Many believe it's possible that AI could start a war or even enslave the human race, he said, adding that he believes an attack on the political system is more plausible.

It's only a matter of time before people are being fooled by AI repeatedly. We are already starting to see it play out, Cramer said, citing a deep fake video of President Joe Biden pitching a stock.

"Is the real fear Skynet from 'Terminator,' or is it maybe a fake presidential candidate from either party who says something so outrageous that it can't be put back in the box," Cramer said.

If a deep fake video came out right before the election, there may not be time to set the story straight, especially given the political system is already "shaky," he said.

Adolf Hitler once staged a skirmish between the Polish and the Germans to justify his invasion of Poland, he said.

"He just dressed a bunch of Germans up in Polish uniforms and had them killed. Now you're not supposed to analogize to the Nazis ever, and I get that, but AI misuse could be the most serious challenge we've seen to democracy in ages," Cramer said.

If there's one thing generative AI is great at, it's telling "believable lies," he emphasized.
