Alphabet Inc.-Backed AI Startup Anthropic Raises $450 Million

With funding of $1 billion to date, Anthropic's valuation has reached $4 billion. And with interest in AI technology continuing to rise, there's a good chance that Anthropic isn't done raising funds.

What Does Anthropic Do?

In its own words, "Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that’s working to build reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems."

Digging deeper, it's important to note that the company is founded by former members of Microsoft Corp.-backed OpenAI.

Who's Investing In Anthropic?

While the latest round of funding was led by Spark Capital, others — including Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures and Zoom Ventures — were involved.

This round points toward Anthropic becoming a bigger player in the AI space. For example, Zoom Video Communications Inc. recently announced its investment in the company and plans to integrate its technology into its video-conferencing platform.

"We are thrilled that these leading investors and technology companies are supporting Anthropic's mission: AI research and products that put safety at the frontier," Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said. "The systems we are building are being designed to provide reliable AI services that can positively impact businesses and consumers now and in the future."

How Will Anthropic Use The Funds?

With its Series C funding in hand, the company has its sights set on broadening its range of product offerings. It also has plans to back businesses that want to conscientiously integrate Claude, its AI product, into the market, all while pushing the envelope in AI safety research.

The company’s team of experts is refining AI alignment strategies that empower AI systems to effectively navigate adversarial interactions, adhere to explicit directives and offer increased clarity about their operations and boundaries.

Another exciting addition under development is the “100K context windows”. This innovative feature is designed to process and interpret hundreds of pages of user-inputted documents in one go, promising an in-depth analysis by Claude.
