An Apple Inc AAPL smartwatch saved a woman's life by waking her up from slumber after she suffered a potentially deadly health complication.
What Happened: Kimmie Watkins, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was saved from a blood clot by her Apple Watch's heart monitoring features, reported AppleInsider citing Local 12.
Watkins reportedly felt unwell one day and took a nap in order to feel better as she had been feeling lightheaded and dizzy, she attributed her condition to not eating enough.
However, soon after beginning her nap, she was altered by her Apple Watch with an alarm — her heart rate had shot up to 178 beats per minute.
The Apple wearable noticed that Watkins' heart rate had been too high for an extended period of time. She said, "So for over 10 minutes, it was too high.”
Why It Matters: Watkins was diagnosed by her physician with a saddle pulmonary embolism. Richard Becker, a cardiologist with the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine, said it was the most severe and life-threatening type of blood clot, according to the report.
Becker reportedly said there was a 50% survival rate for the condition. The blood clot saddles both the blood vessel to the right lung and to the left lung.
Watkins expressed the hope that others would take to wearing health-monitoring devices such as the Apple Watch.
Earlier, the Apple Watch altered a user of internal bleeding, which had resulted in a racing pulse rate for the wearer.
