This Third Party Candidate Can Give Trump Decisive Advantage Against Biden In A 2024 Rematch: Poll

In a potential 2024 rematch between President Biden and former President Trump, a third-party candidate could tip the scales in Trump’s favor, according to a recent poll.

What Happened: An Emerson College national poll reveals that in a head-to-head matchup, Biden and Trump are statistically tied at 44 percent and 43 percent respectively among voters. However, the introduction of third-party candidate Cornel West into the fray sees Biden’s support drop to 40 percent, while Trump’s decreases to 41 percent, with West holding six percent support, The Hill reports.

"When West is added to the ballot test, he pulls 15 percent of support from Black voters, and 13 percent from voters under 35, two key voting blocs for President Biden," said Spencer Kimball, the director of Emerson College Polling.

Why It Matters: The possibility of a third-party spoiler candidate has raised concerns among Democrats. The bipartisan group “No Labels” has been working towards launching a “unity ticket” as an alternative to Democrats or Republicans, given the likelihood of a Biden-Trump rematch.

West’s candidacy could pose a significant threat to Biden in a general election, more so than Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Democratic primary challenge, The Hill noted. Amy Walter, the editor-in-chief of the Cook Political Report, questioned on Twitter whether West’s candidacy was more threatening to Biden than Kennedy’s.

In response, veteran GOP pollster Kellyanne Conway affirmed on Fox News, "It's very likely. Amy Walter is onto something, and I'll tell you why: Even if you don't become president, you, as a third-party candidate spoiler, can decide who is the president."
