Former President Donald Trump on Thursday berated his Republican primary opponent Ron DeSantis and said the Florida governor's campaign is “dead” and “heading to hell.”
What Happened: Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to attack DeSantis, who is trailing behind the former president in the 2024 race to the White House.
Referring to DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious,” Trump wrote, “The DeSanctimonious campaign is DEAD!”
The former leader also claimed that his recent federal indictment in Miami related to his handling of classified documents at Mar-A-Lago occurred because he led Joe Biden by “so much” in the polls. He also implicated DeSantis in the conspiracy, announcing his campaign’s demise and asserting that “they” are eagerly seeking to face his GOP opponent rather than Trump.
“His polls are dropping like a rock heading to Hell, and the DOJ/FBI are continuing their illegal and outrageous weaponization against me only because I am leading Biden by so much. It’s called ELECTION INTERFERENCE, and they have NO FEAR against DeSanctus – He’s the one that they are dying to run against, dispute [sic] their DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN!”
Although DeSantis is currently behind the former president by approximately 30 points in recent polling averages compiled by RealClearPolitics, he remains Trump’s closest rival in the primary race.
In a hypothetical general election rematch, Trump is in a statistical tie with Biden, holding a slight 0.6% advantage in a RealClearPolitics average. The president holds a narrow 1% lead on par when comparing polls for a potential Biden-DeSantis matchup. However, other polls suggest that the Florida leader may perform better than Trump in swing states.
