Foldable Phones On Ropes? Nothing's CEO Reveals Surprising Disinterest In The Latest Tech Trend

Foldable phones have taken the tech world by storm in 2023, but one innovative newcomer, Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei has challenged the hype and revealed why they’re not jumping on the bandwagon.

What Happened: In a recent interview with India Today, Nothing’s CEO expressed the company’s disinterest in launching a foldable device, challenging the notion that this latest smartphone technology is the future.

Pei dismissed rumors about a potential foldable phone from Nothing, labeling foldable as niche products.

He argued that despite manufacturers’ push for innovation, consumers struggle to differentiate between foldable models, suggesting a lack of demand for such devices. “I don’t think consumers walk around saying, hey, I wish my phone could fold,” Pei emphasized.

Referring to companies like Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd SSNLF, and OnePlus (also co-founded by Pei), taking significant steps forward in the foldable smartphone market, he stated that every model appears to be the same. "It's good that some people are building it, but if you look at how the foldables are evolving, they are all the same again."

Having said that, while Nothing’s CEO firmly denied any immediate plans for a foldable phone, he left the door open for future possibilities.

Why It's Important: For the unversed, earlier this year, Google unveiled the Pixel Fold, touted as the thinnest foldable smartphone in the market. With this launch, Google now challenges Samsung's dominant position in the foldable smartphone business.
