In a tweet over the weekend, influential tech figure Marc Andreessen suggested that the proposed cage fight between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg could serve as an inspiration for children.
What Happened: Andreessen’s tweet argues that the message behind the MMA fight to children is not about “‘how you beat people up” but about how you “protect yourself.”
“People get attacked in the street, or in carjackings and home invasions, daily, in plain sight, and little to nothing happens. It's terrible, but it's true,” Andreessen said.
“If there aren't going to be police to protect you and your loved ones from real world violent assault, there is a practical need to know applied self defense. And hand-to-hand fighting – MMA – is the core self defense skill.”
The ace venture capitalist said MMA is “the original combat sport.” The Greeks called it "pankration" and began practicing it in 648 B.C., he said.
“It is the same thing – a combination of boxing and wrestling.”
Why It Matters: Andreessen’s tweet comes in the wake of escalating tensions between Musk and Zuckerberg, both of whom have been training for a potential physical showdown.
Musk had initially proposed a “cage match” to Zuckerberg, who responded with a resolute “send me location.” This exchange has sparked widespread anticipation for a potential face-off between the two tech titans.
The proposed cage match between Musk and Zuckerberg is more than just a spectacle. It represents a physical manifestation of the ongoing rivalry between two of the most influential figures in the tech industry.
Their disagreements have spanned topics from artificial intelligence to rocket mishaps, and this potential showdown could serve as a symbolic resolution of their differences.
Both Musk and Zuckerberg have been seen training with renowned fighters, further fueling the anticipation for their match. Zuckerberg has been training with Israel Adesanya, the current Middleweight UFC champion, while Musk has been spotted training with UFC legend Georges St. Pierre and MMA instructor John Danaher.
The potential cage match could well be a reality, given both tech magnates’ backgrounds in martial arts.
The ongoing feud between Musk and Zuckerberg has also spilled over into their professional lives, with Musk recently launching a scathing insult at Zuckerberg on Twitter. This public display of animosity has only added to the intrigue surrounding their proposed cage match.
