On Tuesday, GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy voiced his opposition to the potential indictment of former President Donald Trump related to the events of Jan. 6.
What Happened: Ramaswamy expressed his concerns about the potential indictment of Trump, stating that it would be a “bad idea,” The Hill reports.
"I think he should be held accountable at the ballot box, not at the behest of a federal administrative police state," Ramaswamy said.
"I think it is a bad idea for this country to make a pattern out of using police power to indict a lead political opponent in the middle of an election."
This comes amidst Trump’s ongoing legal battles and his continued dominance in the GOP field, despite facing multiple indictments and potential criminal charges.
Why It Matters: The potential indictment of Trump has sparked a debate within the GOP. While some, like Chris Christie, can’t imagine a pardon for Trump in the Mar-a-Lago case, others like Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley have expressed their inclination towards supporting a pardon if Trump were to be convicted of federal charges.
Ramaswamy’s opposition to the indictment also comes with a warning that the FBI might go after President Joe Biden next if they successfully prove the alleged mishandling of classified documents by Trump.
