In the ongoing push for AI regulations, Elon Musk once again found himself on the outside looking in as the Biden administration steers discussions with other tech giants.

On Friday, a group of tech heavyweights, including Alphabet Inc. GOOG GOOGL, Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Meta Platforms Inc. META, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Inflection, pledged to adhere to a set of voluntary guidelines aimed at mitigating AI-related risks.
However, notably absent from this collaboration was Musk’s xAI, the tech billionaire’s latest venture that aims to “understand the true nature of the universe.”
This snub is not an isolated incident.
Why It Matters: Earlier this year, in May, during a meeting with CEOs of four leading U.S. AI companies, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris convened to discuss AI innovation, but Musk was excluded.
The following month, during a meeting with President Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where numerous tech CEOs and senior officials were present, Musk and Mark Zuckerberg were missing.
Despite the repeated exclusions, Musk has publicly applauded the White House’s efforts to promote safer AI practices.
In April this year, Musk reminisced about his sole one-on-one meeting with former U.S. President Barack Obama, during which he advocated for AI regulation instead of promoting Tesla or SpaceX.
The tech billionaire is also among the 1000+ signatories, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who signed an “open letter” calling for a pause on training systems exceeding OpenAI’s GPT-4 until safety protocols for such designs are created.
