Donald Trump's Indictments Set To Double: Ex-Solicitor General Weighs In

Former U.S. Solicitor General Neal Katyal said Donald Trump could face additional criminal indictments related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, potentially doubling his current number of indictments.

What Happened: Katyal’s prediction comes in the wake of reports that Trump received a target letter from Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, indicating that additional legal troubles are likely forthcoming.

The potential charges could be related to Trump’s alleged obstruction of the transfer of power to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

This development follows two previous criminal indictments against Trump earlier this year – in the E. Jean Carroll case and Mar-a-Lago classified documents case.

“We know that Jack Smith is thinking of an indictment that at least has these three statutes that you were talking about with [retired Senator] Claire [McCaskill (D-Missouri)]. Could there be more? Absolutely. Could one of them drop out? Absolutely as well,” Katyal said.

“We’re talking here about federal charges. We’re talking about what Jack Smith, the special counsel, is going to bring on behalf of the United States Justice Department. There’s also a separate set of investigations going on in Georgia and perhaps other states about Trump’s fraud around January 6th, the fake electors plot, and stuff like that,” he added.

Why It Matters: The potential third indictment against Trump could significantly impact his political future, including his potential bid for the 2024 presidential election. The trials could also impact Trump’s availability for presidential debates and on the campaign trail for the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to maintain his innocence, labeling this case and others against him as a “Witch Hunt.” He has accused President Joe Biden of weaponizing the Department Of Justice and the federal agencies to take on his political opponent.
