Samsung has pioneered the foldable phones segment, which will only improve with the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 launching this week. But the competition is intensifying, with the likes of Motorola and Oppo closing the gap with their stunning new Razr+ and Find N2 Flip, respectively.
Samsung is all set to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 on July 26. Ahead of the launch of Samsung's fifth-generation foldable phones, here's what we think Samsung needs to do with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to ensure it stays ahead in the foldable phone race.

5 Upgrades The Galaxy Z Flip 5 Needs This Year

1. Larger Cover Display
Samsung has been stingy with the cover display on its "Flip' phones, but that is changing this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is rumored to sport a much larger 3.4-inch cover display, up from the 1.9-inch that was present on its predecessor.
The Motorola Razr+ and the Oppo Find N2 Flip also sport a large cover display, allowing users to place widgets and do more than just view notifications.
Samsung, too, is expected to make the Galaxy Z Flip 5's cover display more useful with specially customized Google apps.
Samsung seems to have this base covered, but it remains to be seen if the result is useful like its competitors.
2. More Useful Widgets
A larger cover display allows for richer, more complex widgets to be placed. Samsung can utilize the larger real estate on the cover display to improve its usefulness. It could borrow from the likes of the Oppo Find N2 Flip to use widgets like Spotify, a recorder, a camera, and more.
The larger cover display will also make it easier for users to capture better selfies using the higher-quality main cameras.
3. Faster Charging
Samsung has lagged behind its rivals when it comes to fast charging. The Motorola Razr+ and Oppo Find N2 Flip have faster charging than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 – at 30W and 44W, respectively, compared to the Flip 4's 25W.
Samsung needs to up its game here to at least these charging speeds. The smaller battery of Flip phones also makes it necessary for faster charging speeds.
4. Kill The Crease
The crease is one of the most noticeable design elements of foldable phones – more so on Samsung's foldables. This could be an issue if the Galaxy Z Flip 5 doesn't kill the crease.
In contrast, the Find N2 Flip has a barely noticeable crease, making it more appealing and less distracting to look at.
5. Retro Mode
Apart from the compact form factor, flip phones also have an element of retro feel to them. This is why Motorola has revived its iconic ‘Razr' brand for its foldable phones. Motorola has also completed this feel with a ‘Retro Razr' mode that brings up the iconic keypad of the original Razr phones.
Samsung could also consider adding a similar mode – after all, Samsung has a rich history of flip phones, too.
