Samsung Unpacks Its Galaxy With Fifth-Gen Fold And Flip, Galaxy Watch 6 And Galaxy Tab S9

Samsung on Wednesday took the wraps off its fifth-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, alongside the Galaxy Watch 6 series and the Galaxy Tab S9 series at its Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea.

What Happened: Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 emerged as the stars of the Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 launch, featuring an updated hinge and a bigger screen cover, in line with the leaks so far.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Steals The Show: The Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers the most significant upgrade thanks to its large 3.4-inch display as expected – Samsung calls it the Flex Window. The company says it has 13 customized widgets to run specifically on the Flex Window, including WhatsApp and Google Maps via its experimental labs feature.

The Flex Window also makes for a great viewfinder – you can click better selfies with the rear cameras and use the phone as its own tripod to capture stable videos. Samsung has added a feature called "Auto Tracking" that will keep you focused even as you move around.

Samsung has updated the hinge, too, nearly eliminating all the gaps and making the phone look a little less bulky. The new mechanism also helps reduce the crease size and feel, bringing it in line with the Oppo Find N2 Flip launched earlier this year.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 sports a 6.7-inch main display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, two 12MP rear cameras, and a 10MP selfie camera.

Powering it is a 3,700mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging support, unchanged from last year.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 prices start at $999 and will go on sale from August 11.

More Of The Same With The Galaxy Z Fold 5: The most premium of all the devices launched, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a minor upgrade over its predecessor. Samsung has refined the smartphone with a hinge and chipset upgrade, while most other hardware features are the same.

Like its flip sibling, the Galaxy Z Fold 5's updated hinge almost completely closes the gap and reduces a lot of the bulk of its predecessors. Similarly, it also allows for a much less obvious crease, which can otherwise be a distraction.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a large 7.6-inch main display and a 6.2-inch external display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It has a 4,400mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging support.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 prices start at $1,799 and will go on sale from August 11.

Turn The Time With Galaxy Watch 6 Series: Another highlight of the Galaxy Unpacked event is the new Galaxy Watch 6 Series. While the standard variant is a regular smartwatch, Samsung also unveiled a Classic variant with a rotating bezel.

Both the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic come in two variants with 1.5-inch and 1.3-inch displays. The Classic variant is slightly larger overall than the standard one, at 47mm and 43mm, compared to 44mm and 40mm on the standard variant.

Powering the new Galaxy Watch 6 is Wear OS and a new Exynos chipset. Samsung has increased the memory to 2GB, with 16GB of storage. Other features include electrocardiogram, heart rate, blood pressure, and fall detection.

Both the smartwatches are IP68 rated.

The Galaxy Watch 6 prices start at $299, while the Classic is $399. Both will go on sale starting August 11.

Galaxy Tab S9 Series To Round It Off: Samsung rounded off its Unpacked launch with the Galaxy Tab S9 series, including a trio of tablets.

The Galaxy Tab S9 series is large, starting with an 11-inch display and going up to 14.6 inches. The top-tier Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra sports a 14.6-inch display, making it eligible to become a serious replacement for a notebook.

Samsung has used the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset to power all three tablets, just like its new foldables. This is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, so you're never short on memory or storage.

Samsung has also tried to make a cohesive ecosystem with its continuity features, allowing you to use select Galaxy phones as a companion display for the tablet.

While the standard Tab S9 gets a smaller 8,400mAh battery, the Tab S9 Plus has a bigger 10,090mAh cell powering it. The top-tier Tab S9 Ultra packs an 11,200mAh battery. All three tablets also get a bundled stylus.

The Galaxy Tab S9 starts at $799, the Tab S9 Plus at $999, and the Tab S9 Ultra at $1,199, with open sale beginning August 11.
