Lucid Motors‘ LCID limited-production Air Sapphire is seemingly ready to hit the road.
What Happened: The EV company shared a picture of a release candidate of the blue Sapphire on the line in Casa Grande, Arizona, on Thursday.
“The world’s first luxury electric super-sports sedan will be available soon,” the company wrote in a post, raising anticipation for the vehicle whose delivery was planned for the first half of this year. The vehicle will be available in the U.S. and Canada at $249,000 USD and $325,000 CAD, respectively.
The Sapphire can deliver over 1,200 horsepower with its three-motor powertrain. It can also deliver an acceleration of 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds and 0-100 mph in less than 4 seconds.
"Sapphire represents the pinnacle of electric performance, finally achieving the performance that I’ve so long searched for. After painstaking development work, I am able to confirm Lucid Air Sapphire has achieved a satisfactory performance, and I trust the most discerning drivers will agree," Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said during the vehicle’s introduction in August last year. Rawlinson was formerly the chief engineer for Model S at Tesla.
Why It Matters: Earlier this month, the popular YouTube channel MotorTrend unveiled an intriguing showdown between a Sapphire prototype and a Ferrari SF90 Spider to an unexpected outcome. During the race, the Lucid Air Sapphire prototype showcased its impressive capabilities by outperforming the Ferrari.
In December, an engineering prototype of the Sapphire also beat the Tesla Model S Plaid and a Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport in a quarter-mile drag race.
