Taiwan has initiated an investigation into several military officers suspected of leaking sensitive information to China, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry in Taipei, Bloomberg reports.
The suspects, including a lieutenant colonel, are believed to have provided classified details to representatives of China’s ruling Communist Party. Both active and retired members of the army’s aviation and special forces commands are under scrutiny.
Two individuals have been detained, while four others have been released on bail. This case underscores the ongoing espionage threat Taiwan faces from its larger neighbor.
The U.S., Taiwan’s primary supporter, has expressed concerns about Taiwan’s ability to safeguard tech and other secrets from Beijing. The Defense Ministry has pledged to enhance personnel education about China’s infiltration efforts and bolster security measures.
