In a move against alleged misinformation, Russia has fined Apple and Wikipedia, Politico reports.
A Russian court imposed a fine of 400,000 rubles (around $4216.3) on Apple for not removing what it deemed as false material on Apple Podcasts. The Russian media regulator, Roskomnadzor, had previously notified the tech giant about the content, claiming it was “aimed at destabilizing the political situation” in Russia.
Wikipedia was also hit with a fine of 3 million rubles (around $31619.73) for a similar offense. This marks the first time Apple has been fined for such an offense, while the Wikimedia Foundation, the owner of Wikipedia, has faced numerous fines in the past.
Apple had previously halted the sale of all its products in Russia and limited Apple Pay services in 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
