A recent poll by CBS News and YouGov reveals America’s perspective on former president Donald Trump‘s indictment this week, shedding light on the nation’s stance on democracy, CBS News reports.
According to the poll, 50% of Americans believe that Trump attempted to remain in office beyond his term through illegal and unconstitutional methods. This action, for many, signifies an undermining of democracy.
The majority views the series of indictments and ongoing investigations against Trump as efforts to “defending democracy” and “upholding the rule of law.”
Conversely, nearly one-third of the country believes Trump sought to stay in office through legal means, largely influenced by the belief that the election was illegitimate.
Many Republicans perceive the indictments as personal attacks, resonating with Trump’s campaign rhetoric. A significant portion of the GOP also believes these legal actions aim to hinder Trump’s potential 2024 presidential campaign.
Most Americans describe the multiple indictments as efforts to uphold the rule of law and defend democracy. However, there’s also a belief, especially among Republicans, that these are tactics to thwart Trump’s 2024 campaign.
