In an unexpected twist of tech meets tradition, popular YouTuber NanoRobotGeek, known off-screen as Jack Spiggle, has turned the first Apple Watch into an elegant analog timepiece. This redesigned piece uniquely operates without ever needing a battery charge.

The recent launch of Apple’s Watch Ultra inspired Spiggle to revisit the company’s roots. As his base model, he chose the Gen 1 Apple Watch, discontinued by Apple in 2020 due to waning battery life. Acquiring these watches second-hand from eBay primarily for their resilient stainless steel chassis and premium sapphire glass, Jack’s ambitious plan was to build a mechanical Apple Watch, complete with a functional crown and button.

In a comprehensive 25-minute video, Spiggle meticulously transforms the modern smartwatch. Inside the watch, a Seiko NH38 movement powers its gears. It’s more complex than placing this movement inside. With their intricate design and engineering, Analog watches required Jack to handle the watch components with extreme precision. The whole venture was mainly a two-step process: gutting the original Apple Watch and fitting the new mechanical marvel inside.

The Seiko NH38 was the ideal choice for this undertaking. It’s an economic movement that self-charges via an oscillating weight inside, translating wrist motions into stored energy. Remarkably, the NH38 boasts a power reserve of 41 hours. Hence, daily wearers never have to worry about charging, a groundbreaking achievement for any Apple Watch.

The custom oscillating weight is a standout feature, visible from the watch’s rear, and something that I really liked. The watch actually looks more stunning from the back than from the front. Jack artfully laser-cut the Apple logo onto this weight, adding the movement model and jewel count for a personal touch. The movement sits behind a zirconium plate, showcasing only the watch’s captivating flywheel. Jack enhanced the watch’s usability by creating a unique crown and button mechanism to prevent unintentional time alterations.

Once assembled, the watch was crowned with its original sapphire glass and a rear glass unit. While Jack initially used the original silicone strap, he later swapped it for a classier leather variant in a follow-up video, enhancing its vintage charm.

With this innovative endeavor, Jack Spiggle has merged the past with the present, offering a sustainability vision. It’s a beacon for tech enthusiasts to reimagine and repurpose, rather than discard, their old devices.
