Chris Christie Criticizes Donald Trump's Potential Absence From Republican Debate: 'He Thinks...He's The Best-Known Person In The Race'

The former Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, has criticized former President Donald Trump for his potential absence from the forthcoming Republican debate.

What Happened: Christie, in an interview with Fox News, insinuated that Trump’s nonattendance at the debate would symbolize a “lack of respect” towards Republican voters.

"The different it makes is for the Republican voters, because it shows his complete lack of respect for Republican voters," Christie said.

"He thinks, because he won the nomination twice, that it's his. And he thinks that these numbers actually mean they approve of what he did, when, in essence, it's just that he's the best-known person in the race."

Christie, a vocal critic of Trump’s campaign, underscored that Trump’s absence would reflect his habitual disrespect throughout his presidency. He also noted that Trump not appearing at the debate would grant him more speaking time.

Why It Matters: Trump has indicated his likelihood of skipping the debate due to his poll lead, which Christie views as showing disdain for the voters.

Trump has yet to confirm his debate participation, revealing that he will make his decision known next week. He further stated that he would not sign the loyalty pledge required by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to partake in the debate.

The public feud between the former allies continues, spurred by recent exchanges about Trump’s comments on Christie’s weight. A poll by Morning Consult reveals Trump leading with 59% GOP voter support, while Christie stands at 3%.
