On Sunday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) took to Twitter, alleging that Hunter Biden’s business activities were essentially those of President Joe Biden, accusing them of extracting millions from corrupt oligarchs in exchange for political favors.
What Happened: In his tweet, Cruz stated, “Hunter Biden has no marketable skills. His business was selling access to Joe Biden. These were Joe Biden's business dealings—shaking down corrupt oligarchs for millions of dollars for political favors.”
The Department of Justice recently announced that U.S. Attorney David Weiss will serve as special counsel in the ongoing investigation of the president’s son, Hunter Biden. This decision comes after Weiss advised that his investigation had reached a stage warranting his continuation as a Special Counsel. The case is expected to go to trial either in California or Washington, D.C.

Why It Matters: The Hunter Biden investigation has been a point of contention for years, with Republicans asserting that Hunter Biden’s laptop contained incriminating information.
Weiss, nominated by then-President Donald Trump in 2017, has been investigating Biden’s son since 2019. The controversy gains traction as the White House prepares for the 2024 reelection campaign. So far, Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges related to tax evasion, while details about a separate gun charge remain unclear.
Previously, Donald Trump had criticized a plea deal where Hunter Biden agreed to admit guilt to minor tax crimes, likening it to a “traffic ticket” and alleging a massive cover-up. The plea deal would have seen Hunter admit to misdemeanor tax charges and illegal weapon possession.
