Hunter Biden‘s attorney, Abbe Lowell, refutes claims that a trial is unavoidable following the breakdown of plea negotiations, Financial Times reports.
In a recent court document, prosecutors indicated that they had hit a deadlock with Hunter Biden, suggesting that the case might not conclude without a trial. However, in a discussion on CBS‘ “Face the Nation,” Lowell countered this claim, stating, “It's not inevitable.” He emphasized that both parties had been seeking a resolution outside of court proceedings.
Last month, Hunter Biden consented to plead guilty to two minor offenses related to unpaid taxes for 2017 and 2018 and misrepresentation about his drug use during a 2018 firearm purchase. This agreement fell apart when a judge expressed concerns about its implications for potential future charges.
Lowell criticized the prosecutors for their abrupt change in stance and voiced his reservations about David Weiss, the special counsel appointed to the case. He expressed confidence in the absence of any new evidence against his client.
The disintegration of the plea agreement has once again brought Hunter Biden‘s legal troubles to the forefront, potentially jeopardizing President Biden’s chances of re-election. Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues his onslaught against Hunter Biden, aiming to tarnish his father’s reputation.
House Republicans, led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, have also expressed their intent to delve deeper into the matter, questioning the credibility of Weiss as a special counsel.
