Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urged Disney to “drop the lawsuit” and “move forward” during an interview with CNBC’s Brian Sullivan on “Last Call” on Monday, August 14, 2023. The comments were made in the context of the ongoing feud between the state of Florida and The Walt Disney Company DIS.
What Happened: In the interview, DeSantis emphasized that Florida had been instrumental in Disney’s success during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing the company to operate while other states remained locked down.
When asked about the possibility of calling Disney CEO Bob Iger, DeSantis responded, “What I would say is drop the lawsuit, you know, you have the state that even CNBC ranks as number one of all 50 states for economy… let’s move forward,” reported CNBC.
DeSantis also expressed concerns about Disney’s recent direction, suggesting that the company should return to its traditional values. He stated, “I would just say go back to what you did well. I think it’s going to be the right business decision and all that.”
These comments come amidst a legal battle between Disney and the state of Florida over the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and Disney’s special privileges within the state. The governor emphasized that he was not fine with giving “extraordinary privileges” to one company at the exclusion of others.

Why It Matters: The governor’s call for Disney to drop the lawsuit and his critique of the company’s direction reflect the ongoing tensions between the two entities.
DeSantis’ comments align with previous instances where he criticized Disney for its stance on social issues. On the other hand, Disney’s CEO has countered such claims, emphasizing the company’s commitment to inclusivity.
