Ukrainian Soldier Accuses Russian Forces Of Torture: They 'Were Playing With Us, The Way A Cat Plays With A Mouse'

A Ukrainian soldier alleges he was tortured for amusement by Russian forces rather than interrogating him for information.

According to The Washington PostIlia Mykhalchuk, a soldier from the 67th Mechanized Brigade, was captured in Bakhmut and held prisoner for 46 days by the Wagner Group. Mykhalchuk noted that instead of being interrogated for intelligence, he was subjected to psychological torture.

“They were just playing with us, the way a cat plays with a mouse — when he catches it before he kills it,” Mykhalchuk told The Post. He also stated that his captors crudely amputated his arms without proper medical care following severe battle injuries.

“They tried to make us believe that we couldn’t trust each other, and that it was a kill-or-be-killed situation.”

The Wagner Group, funded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, is known for its forces of mercenaries and convicts serving reduced jail time. The group has a history of alleged violent attacks against African civilians.

Reports of war crimes by Russian forces have surfaced since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In May 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of “unlawful deportation” and “unlawful transfer” of Ukrainians, particularly children.
