GOP Presidential Candidate Says Will Make A Deal With Vladimir Putin To Counter Xi Jinping If Elected: 'We're Actually Pushing Russia Further Into China's Hands'

Presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy pledges to negotiate a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin if elected.

What Happened: The Republican candidate at the town hall hosted by NewsNation expressed his intent to strike a “good deal” with Putin to weaken Russia’s ties with Xi Jinping.

"We will do a deal and a good deal."

Ramaswamy’s proposed deal involves a commitment to Putin that NATO will not admit Ukraine, provided Russia severs its military partnership with China.

"The Russia-China military partnership outmatches the U.S. on nuclear capabilities, on hypersonic missiles, on China's naval capacities," Ramaswamy said, adding, "Worst of all, through the Ukraine war, we're actually pushing Russia further into China's hands. So, I will end that (the Russia-Ukraine) war."

The candidate does not trust Putin but believes in Putin’s pursuit of self-interest. He claims that by committing not to support Ukraine’s admission into NATO, Putin will have “no reason” to maintain a military partnership with China. "I don't trust Vladimir Putin, but I trust him to follow his self-interest," he added.

Why It Matters: Ramaswamy also pledged to defend the U.S. and only utilize military force under immediate threat. His comments come amidst the Biden administration’s request to Congress for defense and humanitarian aid for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ramaswamy, last week suggested that the U.S.' involvement in the war in Ukraine might be due to a possible bribe involving President Joe Biden‘s son, Hunter Biden. “Was the payment to Hunter Biden corrupt? Absolutely it was. Do I think that it has some relationship towards our posture toward Ukraine? I think it’s likely that it does,” Ramaswamy said.
