Republican lawmaker from Colorado Ken Buck criticized Georgia’s racketeering charges against former President Donald Trump, deeming them too broad, The Hill reports.
In an MSNBC interview, Buck remarked, "This charge is really a nuclear bomb where a bullet would have been appropriate."
He believes such charges should have been pursued federally, if at all. Referring to the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, Buck said, "RICO was meant to cover mafia cases, it was meant to cover international drug organizations."
A Georgia grand jury indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants focusing on their attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. The case, led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, utilizes the state RICO law, originally designed in 1970 to combat organized crime. However, in Georgia, it can target any criminal "enterprise."
