Faster Than Lightning: iPhone 15's USB-C Port Could Support Blazing Fast Data Transfer Speeds

While Apple Inc. AAPL is largely expected to equip the iPhone 15 with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port, a new report suggests that iPhone fans have more to look forward to than just a new port.

What Happened: The iPhone 15's USB-C port could support blazing-fast data transmission speeds allowing users to transfer enormous amounts of data at a much faster click, reported ChargerLab.

Even better, buyers won't have to shell out for the most expensive iPhone 15 models either.

While iPhone 15's USB-C connector parts have previously leaked, it wasn't known until now what chip was powering it.

According to the report, the iPhone 15's USB-C port is powered by a Thunderbolt/USB 4.0 Retimer chip, allowing the phone to support data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps.

Faster Than Lightning: For context, the existing iPhone 14 models with the Lightning port use the USB 2.0 protocol, which supports speeds of up to 480 Mbps. This is nearly 80 times slower than the iPhone 15's rumored 40 Gbps transfer speeds.

The report claims that at least three models of the iPhone 15 – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro Max – have the USB-C port with the Retimer chip.

Interestingly, the iPhone 15 Pro is missing from the list, but if the non-Pro models support it, likely, the iPhone 15 Pro will also support Thunderbolt/USB 4.0 speeds.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are also expected to feature a titanium design and an Action Button borrowed from the Apple Watch Ultra. Apple is also expected to use the A17 Bionic chipset on the Pro models, while the non-Pro models will likely use the A16 Bionic chipset.

We should know more about the iPhone 15 series in September when Apple is expected to launch them, alongside the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
