  • Freelance writers are charging up to $250 an hour, which would amount to $400,000 a year working full-time.
  • The AI boom appears to be helping writers, not hurting them.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is inevitably going to replace some jobs, but it may not play out as you would expect. Right now, writing is the most in-demand freelance job there is

What To Know: According to a CNBC report citing new research from Freelancer.com, the most in-demand skill people are hiring for is creative writing.

More and more companies are adopting AI every day. If you aren't using AI, you're falling behind. But it still requires some human oversight, and there are certain areas that it's not up to par in.

"AI can’t replace creativity yet," said Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer.com. "We saw a similar trend occur in the first quarter of the year, as creative design jobs were flourishing despite interest for generative AI tripling."

Most writing jobs require skills beyond just creating content. A good writer is also skilled in researching, editing, fact-checking and search engine optimization. If you possess these skills, you can create a portfolio of your work and market yourself on freelance sites.

The report indicates that writers on Freelancer.com are charging up to $250 an hour, which would amount to $400,000 a year working full-time.

Writers can also become familiar with AI tools like Microsoft Corp MSFT-backed ChatGPT to help boost earnings. AI prompting is becoming a highly sought-after skill.

According to the head of verticals and integration at Fiverr, another popular freelance site, employers are increasingly looking to hire freelancers for AI-related writing services. Demand for AI writing jobs jumped 80% last quarter compared to the first quarter of the year.

Freelance copywriter and SEO specialist Gabrielle Gerbus has leveraged AI in her work. She added AI content editing to her list of skills and charges $100 or more for the gig.

"Business owners know that high volumes of AI-generated content isn’t the end-all-be-all, it’s more nuanced, it needs a human touch," she said.

As previously reported by Benzinga, AI prompt engineers, tasked with training large language models, or LLMs, to communicate in a useful way, can make up to $335,000 per year.
