Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, relished the Georgia indictment of another former Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.
What Happened: Cohen, who was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to several felonies in 2018, reacted with joy to Giuliani’s indictment. “Karma boomerang is a b**ch!” Cohen told Insider.
Giuliani, a former New York mayor, is charged with RICO violations and other crimes related to Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Trump and Giuliani are among 19 co-defendants named in a 98-page indictment from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ office. Among other charges, Giuliani is accused of solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, false statements and writings, and conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree.

Responding to Cohen’s comments, Ted Goodman, a political advisor to Giuliani, described Cohen’s statement as “clearly deranged” and expressed hope that Cohen gets the help he needs.
Cohen asserted that Trump is disturbed by Giuliani’s indictment but not enough to cover Giuliani’s legal fees. Cohen had previously accused Trump of abandoning him when he was first criminally indicted in 2018.
Why It Matters: The indictment is part of a larger investigation by District Attorney Willis into alleged attempts by Trump to influence the 2020 election. Trump and his co-defendants are facing charges under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, accused of maintaining Trump’s office unlawfully. Trump, expected to surrender next week in Georgia, has faced a series of indictments, including state charges related to a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
The indictment could potentially impact Trump's prospective 2024 election run. Meanwhile, John Alite, a former mafia hitman, has criticized the indictment, arguing that Trump and Giuliani made “pro-America choices,” unlike his own past criminal actions.
The defendants are required to surrender in Georgia by Aug. 25, with a trial planned within the next six months.
