Former President Donald Trump may skip the upcoming Republican presidential primary debate and is considering counterprogramming instead, reports CNN.
Three sources close to Trump’s campaign have revealed Trump’s current lack of preparation for the debate, hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee. Despite this, an advisor suggests he might still participate last minute.
Concurrently, Trump is exploring ideas for counterprogramming during the debate, including potential appearances on various cable news shows and a sit-down with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
While discussions about a potential interview with Carlson have occurred, no definitive plans have been made. Trump’s hesitation to participate in the debate is also linked to his leading position in the polls, making him reluctant to share the stage with his GOP challengers.
This comes amidst Trump’s recent indictment in Fulton County, Georgia on charges of leading a “criminal enterprise” to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump’s surrender is expected next week, potentially clashing with the GOP debate schedule.
Trump’s decision to potentially skip the debate follows Fox News executives’ failed attempts to persuade him to participate. Trump’s advisors are coordinating with his surrogates to represent him at the debate if he chooses not to attend.
