Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) has warned of a potential Donald Trump return if Joe Biden seeks reelection in 2024.
What Happened Congressman Phillips voiced concerns about President Biden’s reelection bid, fearing it could pave the way for another Trump presidency, on Thursday.
"We're at grave risk of another Trump presidency," Phillips said in an interview with The Washington Post.
"I'm doing this to prevent a return of Donald Trump to the White House."
Phillips has been increasingly critical of Biden’s intentions to run for a second term, despite acknowledging his “historic” legislative achievements. The Congressman has urged Biden to “pass the torch” to preserve his legacy. "I want him to preserve his legacy, not to compromise it," Phillips said.
"And this is exactly why I'm asking — pass the torch, open the stage."
Why It Matters: Phillips’ concerns primarily stem from Biden’s age, currently 80. The White House, however, has dismissed such criticisms, citing Biden’s health report that deems him “fit for duty.”
While Phillips did not name any preferred candidate, he mentioned Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer as a potential contender. Phillips himself has not ruled out a possible candidacy. Phillips’ public comments have sparked frustration among some Democrats, leading to a planned meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to discuss his remarks.
Minnesota Congressman has publicly encouraged potential contenders for the 2024 Presidential election to challenge President Biden. Despite the advantage Biden currently holds within his party, internal competition is evident. A recent poll conducted by The New York Times/Siena College indicated that 64% of Democratic voters would prefer a candidate other than Biden.
