Avicii Creates History By Becoming The First Swedish Artist To Break 2B Streams On Spotify With This Song

Late Swedish DJ and producer Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii, has achieved a historic feat with his globally acclaimed hit single, “Wake Me Up.”

What Happened: Avicii has etched his name in history as the first-ever Swedish musician to shatter the 2 billion streams mark on Spotify Technology S.A. SPOT

The announcement came directly from Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share this news with the world.

Avicii’s posthumous success with “Wake Me Up” is a testament to his enduring influence on the music industry. The track, featuring soulful vocals by Aloe Blacc, was released in 2013 and quickly became an anthem for a generation.

Its infectious melody, blending elements of EDM and folk, struck a chord with listeners worldwide, and its popularity has only continued to soar.

Additionally, “Wake Me Up” was the first song to reach 200 million streams on Spotify in 2014.

Apart from “Wake Me Up,” the renowned artist has several other chart-topping tracks, such as “Levels” and “Hey Brother.”

Ek’s post also gave a shoutout to Avicii’s manager, Ash Pournouri, who believed in his talent long before the Swedish artist became a household name.

Why It’s Important: Avicii tragically took his life at 28 while vacationing in Muscat, Oman. His family decided to share “Tim,” the third and final studio album by Swedish DJ and producer with the world. It was unveiled on June 6, 2019, and was his sole posthumous album release following his tragic death a year earlier.

Net proceeds from the album went to Tim Bergling Foundation, established in Avicii’s memory, to address suicide prevention and mental health issues.
