Nevada’s Governor, Joe Lombardo, has proclaimed a state of emergency in anticipation of Tropical Storm Hilary.
The governor made the declaration in response to the oncoming severe weather event. The governor’s office is working closely with state, federal, tribal, and local partners to prepare for and respond to the storm, The Hill reported.
"Today, I am declaring a state of emergency due to the imminent impact of Hurricane Hilary across the state," Lombardo announced. He urged Nevadans to anticipate flooding, stay alert, and follow guidance from emergency officials.
Lombardo’s declaration will enable the state and affected communities to receive federal aid. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has already dispatched staff to assist in Nevada’s response, as reported by CBS’s Reno, Nevada affiliate KTVN.
In addition to the state of emergency, the governor has activated 100 state National Guard members to assist in southern Nevada. Tropical Storm Hilary, which has already hit Mexico’s Baja coast, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential flash floods to Las Vegas and surrounding areas.
