Dean Phillips Says He Won't Challenge Joe Biden In 2024: 'Perhaps In The Future'

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) on Monday said that he has no plans to contest for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024, thus ruling out a face-off with incumbent President Joe Biden.

What Happened: Phillips, despite previously advocating for a primary challenge against Biden’s re-election bid, has now confirmed he won’t be running for president in 2024, The Hill reported.

The decision, he explained, "is not something as of today that I see happening for a number of reasons." Phillips, however, remains hopeful about others stepping forward to run against Biden in the primary. He expressed concerns about the advanced ages of Biden and former President Donald Trump, who is leading the 2024 GOP primary.

"Setting up a competitive campaign, the infrastructure, the people, the systems in multi-states, requires a tremendous amount of effort and time, and there are people who have laid that groundwork. I'm not one of them," he said.

"Perhaps in the future. We'll see about that."

Despite his reservations, Phillips pledged to back Biden should he secure the Democratic nomination.

Why It Matters: Phillips has been vocal about his concerns regarding Biden’s potential re-election bid.

Earlier this month, he urged Biden to “pass the torch” in 2024, arguing that the majority of the country was ready to move on. He later also warned that Biden’s re-election could potentially pave the way for Trump’s return to the presidency.

He has been repeatedly urging other Democrats to challenge Biden‘s 2024 bid, emphasizing the importance of competition within the party.
