Donald Trump's Truth Social Might Be Taking A Cue From Elon Musk's X: Eyes Verification Of Non-Notable Accounts

Truth Social, owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), appears to be taking a page from Elon Musk’s playbook for X (formerly Twitter) as they plan on authenticating non-notable accounts.

What Happened: In a bid to improve the credibility of its platform, Trump’s Truth Social seems to be developing alternative methods to verify accounts that aren’t typically considered notable. 

During the weekend, Navdeep Yadav, a Benzinga employee, received an email from Truth Social after applying for the red checkmark on the platform.

In the email, the company provided information about Truth Social’s verification process, including the process of receiving a red check mark and “other ways to authenticate” an account on the platform.

For the unversed, Truth Social’s red checkmark, similar to Twitter’s blue checkmark, signifies the authenticity of accounts of public interest. 

These are typically associated with government figures, brands, journalists, sports personalities, and entertainers. 

However, the platform now appears to be expanding this concept to cover a broader range of accounts, bridging the gap for lesser-known individuals and entities seeking credibility.

Why It’s Important: The move comes months after Musk introduced Twitter Blue (now known as X Premium), saying that the platform lacks the ability to bring attention to tweets from less widely-recognized accounts, considering the difficulty in differentiating between genuine human users and automated bots or trolls. 

At the time, the tech billionaire also underscored the significance of the $8 per month subscription, coupled with phone and optical ID verification, alongside the inclusion of organizations’ affiliations. 

Notably, the initial Twitter Blue rollout led to numerous impersonations of notable public figures (including Musk himself) and brands, eroding trust and driving advertisers away. 

The tech mogul later admitted to the pitfalls of this approach, vowing not to relaunch Twitter Blue until the issue of significant impersonation was resolved.

Truth Social did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments.
