GOP Rep. Ronny Jackson Says Threat To Kevin McCarthy's Speakership 'Inevitable' If People's Concerns Sidelined For Preventing Government Shutdown

Rep. Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-Calif.) speakership has been warned of a potential threat by Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) unless conservative demands are duly met.

What Happened: Jackson on Steve Bannon's "War Room" highlighted an imminent risk to McCarthy’s speakership, saying his failure to address conservative demands might lead to relying on Democrats to prevent a government shutdown, thereby imperiling his position, The Hill reported on Tuesday.

"It's going to be detrimental to leadership in the House, if they blow off the concerns of the people like myself and the Freedom Caucus and some of the other people on the right that are making reasonable demands in this problem," Jackson said.

"It's going to be a problem."

When questioned about his readiness to push for the removal of McCarthy from the position of Speakership, Jackson replied, "I think that's inevitable."

McCarthy had briefed GOP lawmakers about a possible short-term solution to keep the government running beyond the fiscal year-end on Sept. 30 last week. However, the conservative House Freedom Caucus has opposed any temporary government funding that doesn’t incorporate certain policy measures.

The caucus members are pushing for the inclusion of the “Secure the Border Act of 2023” in any stopgap to control illegal immigration, combat human trafficking, and reduce the flow of fentanyl into communities.

These demands are putting House GOP leaders under strain, who can only risk a few votes in their narrow majority before needing Democratic support to pass any legislation.

Why It Matters: The current situation builds on an earlier conflict where the House Freedom Caucus expressed its opposition to a short-term bill aimed at averting a government shutdown. This was following McCarthy’s communication about a short-term measure to fund the government past the fiscal year ended on Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, this development comes amidst the backdrop of a potential impeachment inquiry against the Biden administration hinted at by McCarthy, which could commence in September unless certain documents are disclosed.
