A recent viral TikTok trend involving parents cracking eggs on their toddlers’ heads has sparked alarm among some medical professionals, NBC News reported.
The prank videos, tagged with #eggprank, show parents cracking an egg on their child’s head instead of cooking it. The reactions vary, but many children appear upset or stunned by the experience.
The videos have amassed more than 670 million views. But alongside the laughs, medical experts have pointed out that the prank may cause unintended short-term effects such as bruising or spreading of germs.
Dr. Meghan Martin, a pediatric emergency medical physician at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, warned of the risk of spreading salmonella by smacking raw egg on children's foreheads.
“We're literally smacking salmonella on their foreheads. It's harder to get a toddler to drink fluids when they've got a stomach bug or food poisoning, and so they're more likely to end up in the hospital for IV fluids," she said.
Despite the concerns, some parents view the prank as harmless fun. Erisa Mullai, a mother of four, said participating in the prank created a cherished memory for her family.
But experts like Martin and Amanda Mathers, a pediatric occupational therapist, worry that such pranks could encourage harmful behaviors in impressionable young children.
