Microsoft MSFT introduces Python support in Excel, enabling advanced data analysis, The Verge reports.
The integration is accessible directly from the Excel ribbon, eliminating the need for additional installations or add-ons.
“You can manipulate and explore data in Excel using Python plots and libraries, and then use Excel's formulas, charts, and PivotTables to further refine your insights,” said Stefan Kinnestrand, general manager of modern work at Microsoft.

Python’s integration is incorporated into Excel’s built-in connectors and Power Query. Additionally, Microsoft introduces a new PY function, allowing Python data to be displayed within Excel spreadsheets. Through collaboration with Anaconda, renowned Python libraries such as pandas, statsmodels, and Matplotlib will be accessible in Excel.
Python computations are processed in the Microsoft Cloud, with outcomes relayed back to the Excel worksheet. This integration facilitates the creation of formulas, PivotTables, and charts based on Python data. Users can also utilize charting libraries like Matplotlib and Seaborn for advanced visualizations.
Guido van Rossum, Python's creator and a Microsoft distinguished engineer, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I expect that both communities will find interesting new uses in this collaboration, amplifying each partner's abilities.”
The Python in Excel feature is currently available as a public preview for Microsoft 365 Insiders in the Beta Channel, initially exclusive to Windows. Some features might require a paid license post-preview.
