Alphabet Inc.’s Google GOOGL has long offered the ability to identify songs by humming through its Google Assistant and Soundhound. Now, the tech giant is extending this feature to YouTube. As part of an experimental phase, users can hum a tune or record a currently playing song to identify it on the platform.

To use this feature, one must switch from YouTube Voice Search to the song search function, then hum or record the song for at least three seconds. The system will then direct users to related content on YouTube, such as official music videos, user-uploaded content, or Shorts clips.

This hum-to-search and recording feature is accessible to a “small percentage” of YouTube’s Android audience. The feature might undergo significant changes before a broader rollout, given its experimental status. Google’s aspirations don’t stop here; they also pilot a “channel shelf” in the Subscriptions feed. This “shelf” will group multiple recent uploads from a single creator, eliminating the need to visit their channel directly for the latest content. This addition aims to reduce the pressure on creators to post multiple times daily.

As these features are in the testing phase, they are available to a limited number of users, with potential changes expected before a full launch.
