United Airlines Reaches $30M Settlement With Quadriplegic Man It Treated Badly: Details

United Airlines Holdings Inc UAL has reached a $30 million settlement with the family of a quadriplegic man who went into a vegetative state after deplaning.

The details of the settlement with the family of Nathaniel Foster Jr, known as N.J. were divulged in San Francisco federal court, according to a report from Reuters.

The incident occurred when Foster, who is a wheelchair user with a ventilator and tracheal tube, was descending from a Feb. 8, 2019, United Express flight to Monroe, Louisiana, with his family.

It was complained that the ramp supervisor had aggressively and forcefully pushed Foster, leading to his body jerking forward and then slouching back, with his feet dragging along the floor.

After the incident, Foster complained of breathlessness and then experienced a cardiac arrest.

The incident caused Foster, now 26, significant brain damage, and is expected to live only till the age of 31.5 compared to a previous life expectancy of 39.

"Our top priority is to provide a safe journey for all our customers, especially those who require additional assistance or the use of a wheelchair," United said in a statement.

About $12 million from the settlement is expected to cover the legal fees and $3 million for the other expenses.

Price Action: UAL shares are trading lower by 0.12% at $50.35 on the last check Thursday.
