Republican Candidates Without Clear Stance On Abortion Risk Losing 2024 Presidential Race: GOP Chair Ronna McDaniel

GOP Chair Ronna McDaniel has asserted that discussing abortion is crucial for Republican candidates to win in 2024.

Following the first Republican presidential debate, McDaniel expressed her satisfaction with the significant focus on abortion. The issue surpassed discussion on former President Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner, reported The New York Times.

McDaniel believes that without a clear stance and response on abortion, Republicans risk losing the race. Despite recent efforts to restrict abortion rights, which have seemingly affected candidates negatively in key races, McDaniel insists on the importance of the issue.

"If our candidates aren't able to find a response and put out a response, we're not going to win," Ms. McDaniel said, according to the report.

Democrats and abortion rights activists also welcomed the extensive debate, hoping to highlight the Republican candidates’ positions, often seen as right-leaning compared to public sentiment.

The New York Times/Siena College poll from July revealed a significant opposition to abortion among likely Republican voters, with 56 percent stating abortion should be mostly or always illegal.

However, the federal ban had less support among a broader pool of voters, with 53 percent opposing it, indicating the potential pitfalls for Republicans in a general election.

The debate exposed divisions within the Republican Party, with candidates differing on whether to enact a federal abortion ban or leave those measures to the states.
