Ford Motor Co F has introduced a new limited edition F-150 Lightning wrapped in matte black!
What Happened: The limited production F-150 Lightning Platinum Black edition will be matte black with 22-inch matte black wheels, black Ford oval badging, soft-shell black tonneau cover and black Nirvana leather interiors. The electric-powered vehicle also sports a smoked signature light bar and an agate black gloss roof.
The company intends to make 2000 units of the vehicle with deliveries expected to start in early 2024. The price tag on the electric truck starts at $97,995, making it the most expensive Lightning thus far. It is also Ford’s first-ever matt-wrapped production truck.
“This is the perfect choice for those customers looking to make a statement," Director of Ford EV truck programs Dave Pericak said.
Why It Matters: Ford has offered blacked-out packages before too. The 1992 Ford F-Series XLT Lariat featured a “Nite” truck package in which the truck was dressed in raven black.
Ford’s history with Black goes a long way. Back in 1909, Ford founder Henry Ford famously said, “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it's black."
In July, Ford cut prices on its least expensive version of the F-150 Lightning by $9,979. Several other trim packages were cut between $8,479 and $9,479 and its most expensive platinum trim model was cut by just over $6,000.
CEO Jim Farley pinned the price cut on the plans to scale production capacity at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan during the company’s second-quarter earnings call last month.
"We didn't cut the price of the F-150 by $10,000 to create an order bank for our current production rate. It's for a tripling," the CEO had said.
The company is seeking to triple its annual run rate to 150,000 F-150 Lightning trucks beginning this fall following an upgrade.
