On Friday, the U.S. alleged that China and Russia were obstructing a cohesive response from the United Nations Security Council to North Korea‘s missile launches.
What Happened: Out of the 15 members in the emergency Security Council meeting, all except Moscow and Beijing condemned North Korea’s latest spy satellite test. This test, which involved the use of ballistic missile technology, marks Pyongyang‘s second in three months, reported South China Morning Post.

“This Council has failed to live up to its commitments due to China and Russia’s obstructionism,” claimed US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield. She further alleged that the DPRK’s nuclear threat is escalating, and Russia and China are not fulfilling their duty to preserve international peace and security.
Thomas-Greenfield also criticized the attendance of Russian and Chinese officials at a North Korean military parade last month, where new drones and nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles were displayed. “They are celebrating violations of Security Council resolutions and continuing to block Council action,” she affirmed.
"The DPRK's war machine is fueled by repression and cruelty," Thomas-Greenfield added. "It's shameful, and it's a grave threat to global peace."
Why It Matters: It is noteworthy that since the veto of a resolution imposing new sanctions on Pyongyang by China and Russia in May 2022, no declaration or resolution by the Security Council on North Korea has been adopted.
