Apple Batterygate Redux? Users Complain iPhone 14 Battery Health Is Falling Faster

Apple Inc. AAPL will soon start issuing settlements in the 2017 batterygate issue, but now users are complaining about the iPhone 14 battery health, in a sort of batterygate redux ahead of the iPhone 15 launch.

What Happened: Many users are now noticing a massive drop in the iPhone 14 battery health. Several of them are complaining that the battery health of their iPhone 14 has degraded considerably faster than previous iPhones, pointing at a possible issue plaguing Apple's latest smartphone.

Several users have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to complain about the sudden, unexpected drop in iPhone 14 battery health – this includes The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern, The Verge's Tom Warren, and blogger Apple Hub, among dozens of others.

Stern reported that her iPhone 14 Pro's battery health is already down to 88% in less than a year of usage. Apple Store staff reportedly told her that her charge cycles have hit 450 – a charge cycle means a full 100% charge from 0%. Charging your phone's battery from 50% to 100% is counted as a half-charge cycle.

Others chimed in, too, with 9to5Google's Max Weinbach stating that his iPhone 14 Pro Max's battery health is down to 89%.

Most of the complaints suggest that the iPhone 14 battery health has fallen to the low 90s and high 80s, with Stern's 88% being amongst the lowest we have noticed so far.

Apple Policy Suggests Most User Complaints Won't Be Serviced Under Warranty

Apple's policy on the battery life of iPhones suggests that most users are complaining about iPhone 14 battery health falling considerably faster than previous iPhones will not be serviced under warranty.

Apple says that iPhone batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their capacity at 500 complete charges. In this case, Stern's iPhone 14 Pro is still comfortably higher, with 88% battery health at 450 charging cycles.

Apple's one-year iPhone warranty covers defective batteries that fall below this 80% mark at less than 500 cycles.
