The first half of 2023 witnessed some of the most staggering tech meltdowns. Notably, Meta Platforms Inc.’s META Instagram witnessed a colossal outage, while Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, was surprisingly absent from the list shared by Downdetector.
What Happened: According to the report, on May 21 this year, Mark Zuckerberg’s Instagram experienced a massive outage, plunging 2.4 million users into digital darkness. Users worldwide could not like photos, send direct messages, or even scroll through their feeds for several hours.
In contrast, although Musk’s X faced its share of controversies, it managed to maintain relative service stability throughout the first half of 2023.
While Instagram’s colossal meltdown stole the spotlight, other notable services like Microsoft Corporation’s MSFT 365, EA EA, Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL YouTube, Steam, and Spotify Inc. SPOT also experienced significant outages during this period.
Beyond these headline-making outages, tech disruptions in 2023 spanned various corners of the digital landscape. From Reddit’s six-hour downtime affecting 1.2 million users on March 14 to Roblox’s Saturday night crisis on Jan. 28, which interrupted the gameplay of over 470,000 users, the tech world faced multiple hiccups.
Why It’s Important: The potential showdown between Musk and Zuckerberg grappled the world for months this year. The rivalry between the tech duo has intensified following the introduction of Threads, a text-based app launched by Instagram in July — which is eerily similar to Musk’s social media platform that he acquired for $44 billion in 2022.
Now, it appears that in terms of having a resilient infrastructure, Musk’s X has gotten an upper hand over Zuckerberg’s social media behemoth.
