As Florida prepares for the landfall of Hurricane Idalia, President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that his administration is in constant contact with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, The Hill reported.
Biden elaborated on his previous day’s conversation with DeSantis during a meeting with the President of Costa Rica in the Oval Office.
“We’re providing everything he could possibly need. We’re in constant contact,” Biden confirmed to the press.
The President expressed concern about the potential ocean surge, promising support to the affected regions for as long as necessary. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the region receives everything it needs to face the oncoming storm.
Hurricane Idalia, now a Category 2 storm, is set to make landfall on Wednesday, bringing with it 100 mph winds, heavy rains, and potential storm surges. Parts of Georgia and South Carolina could also be affected as the storm moves up the coast.
In anticipation of the storm, Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Florida, allowing for additional federal resources to assist the state. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also deployed resources to Florida, as stated by the White House.
About 21 counties in Florida have been issued evacuation notices, eight of them being mandatory. The Hurricane Center adds that some storm surges could reach up to 15 feet.
Despite their political differences, Biden and DeSantis have set aside politics to deal with the impending crisis. This follows a precedent set last year when Biden visited Florida in the aftermath of a building collapse and Hurricane Ian.
